Valentine's Day: history, origins and traditions of the festival of lovers

The 14 February is lit every year with the warmth of hearts in love. Valentine's Day is today the symbol par excellence of romantic love, but this tradition has much deeper and more fascinating roots.

The origins of Valentine's Day

The story of St Valentine takes us back to the 3rd century AD, when the Roman emperor Claudius II banned marriages between young soldiers, convinced that emotional ties made them less valiant in battle. A bishop named Valentine, In order to oppose this unjust law, he started to perform marriages in secret. Discovered, he was arrested and executed on 14 February.

From then on, Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.

Traditions in Italy and the World

In Italy, the holiday is celebrated with romantic dinners, love cards and symbolic gifts. In Terni, the saint's hometown, solemn celebrations take place every year, while Verona, home of Romeo and Juliet, hosts love-themed events and exhibitions.

Around the world, traditions vary: in Japan, for example, it is women who give chocolate to men on 14 February, while on 14 March (White Day) the reciprocal gesture takes place. In France, the “Village des Amoureux” in Saint-Valentin becomes a place of pilgrimage. In Denmark, it is customary to give white flowers called “snowdrops” and anonymous poems called “gaekkebrev”.

Love at the table: the intimacy of flavours

Food has always played a special role in love stories. It is no coincidence that for Valentine's Day people choose ingredients that are considered aphrodisiacs or that awaken the senses: chocolate, strawberries, red wine... and of course Balsamic Vinegar. A touch of Collezione Oro on fresh strawberries or a dark chocolate cake turns a simple dinner into an experience to remember.
