Bologna in a day: art, arcades and flavours

If you are a guest of the Borgo del Balsamicoor you are planning a stay in our Charming residences surrounded by greenery, know that there is one city that is definitely worth a visit: Bologna, the “Dotta, Rossa e Grassa”.

A perfect destination for a day trip, easily reached in less than an hour from Reggio Emilia thanks to high-speed connections.

Between endless arcades and medieval towers

Bologna is a city that is best explored on foot, protected by the more than 40 km of arcades in the historic centre - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - that make its architecture unique. Get lost in the streets of the centre and reach Piazza Maggiore, the beating heart of the city, overlooked by historical buildings such as Palazzo d'Accursio, the Basilica of San Petronio and the Neptune Fountain. A few steps away, the Two Towers (Asinelli and Garisenda) dominate the medieval skyline, the undisputed symbol of Bologna.

A cultural walk

Bologna is also a university city: the Alma Mater Studiorum, the oldest university in the western world, is located here. You can visit the Archiginnasio, with its striking Teatro Anatomico, or stop by the Pinacoteca Nazionale, the MAMbo - the museum of modern art - or simply browse among the historical bookshops and craft workshops dotting the centre.

The taste of tradition

Bolognese cuisine is one of the most popular in Italy. After your walk, treat yourself to a typical lunch in a trattoria: tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini in brodo, lasagne alla bolognese, mortadella and crescentine with cold cuts. The covered markets, such as the Mercato di Mezzo or the Mercato delle Erbe, are perfect for an informal stop between authentic flavours and a convivial atmosphere.

Shopping and atmosphere

For shoppers, Bologna offers both luxury boutiques and independent shops. The area of Via D'Azeglio and Galleria Cavour is ideal for those in search of fashion and design, while Via del Pratello offers an alternative atmosphere, perfect for discovering Bologna's vibrant nightlife.

Returning to the quiet of Borgo

After a day full of discovery, returning to Borgo del Balsamico will be a rejuvenating experience. Nestled in the Emilian countryside, Borgo offers charming hospitality, historic gardens and the unmistakable aroma of traditional balsamic vinegar. A place where time slows down and the quality of life is rediscovered in every detail.
