Visiting Reggio Emilia in a day: art, history and flavours

If you are planning a day trip to the rolling hills of Emilia, Reggio Emilia is a must-see!

A city on a human scale, rich in history and culture, it is the perfect place for an authentic and relaxed experience in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. In this itinerary we tell you what to see in one day in Reggio Emilia, with some suggestions on where to extend your stay in a unique atmosphere, amidst precious vinegars and historic gardens.

Morning: walk around the historic squares and the Tricolour

Start your visit from the beating heart of the city: Piazza Prampolini, also known as “Piazza Grande”. It is overlooked by the Duomo and the Palazzo del Comune, where the Italian flag was born in 1797. Inside the palace is the Museo del Tricolore, a must-see if you want to learn more about the history of our Republic.

Continue to the more intimate and atmospheric Piazza San Prospero, with its basilica of the same name and picturesque local market. An ideal stop for a coffee in one of the many bars with outdoor tables.

Afternoon of art and nature

Devote the afternoon to visiting the Palazzo dei Musei, a rich museum complex housing archaeological finds, ancient art and nature collections. A few steps away, you can admire the famous Romolo Valli Municipal Theatre, one of the most beautiful in Italy, perfect for photographing even from the outside.

If you love nature, a walk in the Public Gardens will allow you to relax in the greenery, among fountains and ancient trees.

Shopping and typical products

Reggio Emilia is also synonymous with gastronomic excellence. Stop at one of the shops in the centre to sample Parmigiano Reggiano, erbazzone, artisan cured meats and, of course, Balsamic Vinegar. Shopping streets such as Via Emilia Santo Stefano and Corso Garibaldi offer boutiques, artisan shops and independent bookshops.

Extend your experience: stay at Borgo at Balsamico

Just 10 minutes by car from the centre of Reggio Emilia, immersed in the quiet hills of Albinea, lies Il Borgo del Balsamico: a historic dwelling transformed into a cosy accommodation facility, where time seems to stand still.

Here you can:

  • Staying in tastefully furnished rooms between design and rural charm
  • Strolling through an enchanting Italian garden
  • Discover the ancient acetaia and the secrets of traditional balsamic vinegar
  • Indulge in relaxing moments between nature and culture
  • Perfect for those who wish to extend their visit to Reggio Emilia with an authentic experience in harmony with the territory.
