In the heart of Emilia, among the rolling hills and villages rich in history, every year one of the most evocative events of Italian tradition is renewed: the Historical Matildic Procession of Quattro Castella. A plunge into the Middle Ages that celebrates one of the most fascinating figures in European history: Matilda of Canossa.
Who was Matilda of Canossa?
Matilda of Canossa (1046 - 1115) was one of the most powerful women of the Middle Ages. Countess, duchess and marchioness, she ruled a vast territory encompassing much of northern Italy, and played a central role in the clash between Papacy and Empire, culminating in the famous 1077 meeting between Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV at Canossa, an event known as the “Humiliation of Canossa”.
A woman of strong character, capable of diplomacy and leadership, Matilda is considered one of the leading figures of her time and a symbol of Emilia's historical identity.
The Matildic Procession: when and where
The Historical Matildic Procession takes place every year in May in Quattro Castella, in the province of Reggio Emilia, right at the foot of the Bianello hill, where Matilda received her imperial reinvestment from Henry V in 1111.
During the event, hundreds of figurants in medieval costume animate the village with:
- Historical parades with nobles, ladies, knights and soldiers
- Theatre performances in the square
- The Quintana dell'Anello, a spectacular chivalric joust between the contrade
- Medieval encampments, period music, falconry shows, dances and craft markets
All in an accurate and enthralling scenic reconstruction, which transforms Quattro Castella into a real medieval village for an entire weekend.
The Matildic Procession is a unique opportunity to:
- Experiencing history at first hand
- Discovering medieval traditions and culture
- Involving the whole family in a spectacular event
- Deepening the figure of Matilda, still celebrated today for her courage and political intelligence
It is also a perfect starting point for exploring the Matildic lands, amidst castles, parish churches, hilly paths and authentic flavours, and if you wish to experience the Matildic pageant in a complete and immersive way, the advice is to choose a charming stay just a few minutes from Quattro Castella here in the fantastic rooms of our Borgo.
