The crowned fly—eater is a bird "crowned" by nature itself

The world of birds is amazing in its diversity. Among the thousands of species, there are those that surprise with their singing, others with their size, and others with their bright plumage. And there is a crowned fly eater — a small bird, looking at which it is impossible to contain surprise. Her main feature is a luxurious fan—shaped crest on her head, which she opens in moments of excitement or during mating games. This crest resembles the headdress of an Indian chief or an exotic flower.
This natural wonder lives in the forests of South America. Despite its bright "crown", the fly eater looks rather modest in everyday life. Its plumage is colored in brownish tones, which helps it to disguise itself among the branches. And only in rare moments does the bird demonstrate its main treasure, turning from an inconspicuous bird into a real monarch of the bird world.
The crown as a weapon and decoration
The crest of the crowned fly eater is not just an ornament. In males, it is colored bright red with blue tips of feathers, in females it is yellow-orange. When folded, it is almost invisible, but at the moment of danger or at the sight of an opponent, the bird instantly opens it, visually increasing in size and trying to scare the opponent.
But the main role of the "crown" is, of course, marital. During courtship, the male performs a complex dance in front of the female, showing off his crest in all its glory. He sways from side to side, bows, and all the while his fiery fan shimmers in the sun. The brighter and more magnificent the crest, the more chances the male has to conquer the heart of his chosen one. This is a real theatrical performance created by nature itself.
Family life and everyday life of "crowned heads"
Despite their regal appearance, crowned fly—eating birds are quite pragmatic in everyday life. As their name implies, their diet is based on insects, which they deftly catch on the fly. They build their nest very skillfully, usually above the water, on hanging branches of trees. This is done in order to protect the chicks from predators such as snakes and monkeys.
The nest is a long, up to two meters, structure woven from plant fibers and moss. The entrance to it is on the side, and the nest itself is so well camouflaged that it resembles just a bunch of debris stuck on a branch. Both parents take care of the offspring: they take turns incubating the eggs and feeding the voracious chicks together.
Fragile beauty is under threat
The crowned fly eater is a vivid example of how amazing and inventive nature's creations can be. Its unique appearance attracts the attention of not only ornithologists, but also naturalist photographers from all over the world. To see this bird with an open crest is a great success.
Unfortunately, like many other inhabitants of tropical forests, crowned fly eaters suffer from deforestation of their natural habitat. The preservation of these unique forest ecosystems is a guarantee that future generations will be able to admire this little bird with a large "crown", a real feathered treasure of the Amazon.
